Why your mind suddenly feels different under PRESSURE?

After my last email post, someone replied with something that stayed with me.

She said that before speaking, her mind fills with questions like:

"Do i sound authentic?"

"Am i making sense?"

"What if i lose my train of thought?"

Then she wrote one sentence that perfectly captured the experience:

"It's a barrage of chatter in my mind."

i think many people can relate to that.

Here's what i've noticed after working with senior tech & non-tech leaders: most of them don't suddenly become less knowledgeable when the stakes are high.

They already know their material.

They've solved the problem.

They've prepared.

Yet when it's time to explain it, something changes.

Their attention shifts - instead of focusing on the idea they want to communicate, part of their mind starts watching themselves:

  • How do i sound?
  • Am i making sense?
  • What if i forget?
  • What if i embarrass myself?

That internal chatter competes for the same mental space you normally use to think clearly.

The result is familiar:

Your thoughts become harder to organize.

You lose your thread.

You begin searching for words that were easy to find five minutes earlier.

After the meeting, everything comes back.

You think: "Why couldn't i say that in the room?"

For a long time, i believed the answer was to become a better speaker.

Practice more. Learn better delivery. Improve body language.

Those things matter.

But i eventually realized they weren't solving the problem i was trying to solve.

Over the next few emails, i'll share what changed my thinking and why i now approach high-stakes communication very differently.

Before i do, i'm curious about something:

When you're under pressure, what's the first thought that usually shows up?

Hit reply, i'd love to see whether the same patterns keep appearing.
